Communicating Internal Audit Findings: Best Practices for Success | Doeren Mayhew CPAs
The internal audit process is an important part of the ISO requirements for implementing a quality management system QMS. In a previous article, Five main steps in ISO internal audit , we discussed the main steps needed to have a good internal audit program. However, even if you are following the audit process as planned, it is important to know how to write down any nonconformities that you find in order to easily investigate them. In terms of an audit, a nonconformity is any time you find evidence that a process has not been performed as it was planned and in accordance with the requirements from the standard. The intent of the audit is to compare the planned arrangements of the process against what is actually happening and verifying that the practices being used conform to what is planned. In short, we expect compliance when we audit, but when we find evidence that this is not the case, we have identified a nonconformity. If you are looking to improve your audit process and include more information from the ISO standard for auditing, the article 13 steps for ISO internal audit using ISO gives more information.

Internal audits for ISO work by following an audit programme that identifies the audits to be carried out before certification and during each certification period. Whilst it is not clear within ISO itself as to how often you must perform internal audits.
